We're All Starving
I recently heard someone describe the population of the western world as starving. Weird right? All we ever hear in the media is how we're all getting fatter and obesity and obesity related diseases are on the rise.
So what was meant by this bizarre statement?
They meant that the western world is NUTRITIONALLY starving. Yes, as a population, we eat a high calorie diet, filled with processed foods, rich in calories, salt, sugar and fat. However, the nutritional value of these foods is negligible.
Imagine for a moment, we turn this current state of affairs on its head. Imagine a world where we eat a low calorie, highly nutritious diet. Well, you don't have to look too far in order to find real life examples where this is the case. This is in fact how our ancestors used to eat and even today certain cultures and populations still consume food in this way. In these populations, obesity is rare, as are obesity related disease such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Just by adding leafy greens, colourful fruits and crunchy veg we can improve our health dramatically and you never know, maybe reduce our risk of certain disease in our futures.

I often read that we were all so much more healthy in WW2. Sadly that sort of diet is probably not seen as 'cool' these days!
ReplyDeleteOur diet has changed dramatically over the years, from caveman days through periods of time where certain foods were scarce to periods of plenty which is where we find ourselves now. There are good and bad points of many diets, the key is to learn and grow and be prepared to try new things :)
DeleteHow long after eating or drinking a coffee/eating cake, should you leave it before exercising?
ReplyDeleteIt really depends how much you've eaten, but most people would need 30 mins for a snack to settle, whereas 1-2 hours might be more appropriate after a meal. Good luck with your exercise journey.
